RESEARCH NOTE: Richard Beard (c.1626-1675/81), early settler of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. Arrived 1650 among the first Puritans moving from Virginia to the South River; brother-in-law of Col. William Burgess. Built the first grist mills at Londontown and the stone house 'Beard's Habitation' on the Severn. A devout Quaker who refused to swear oaths (and was fined), he was nonetheless elected to the Maryland Lower House three times (1662-1666) and petitioned the Assembly to relieve Quakers from oath-taking.
